At Stage One Upholstery, we reupholster lounge suites, chairs, antiques, treasured family heirloom furniture, dining chairs, headboards, virtually any upholstered item, we can refurbish, to new condition.
When a chair or settee is reupholstered by Stage One, all the old fabrics are removed. The frame is inspected for soundness and any required repairs are carried out.Springs and webbings are checked as a matter of course. Worn or broken springs and webbings are removed and replaced.
We think that repadding on a used piece of furniture is of the utmost importance,so we ensure that all the padded areas of the item are built back up, so that the finished article, not only looks good, but feels good too……..bearing in mind that ‘Beauty is only skin deep, it’s what’s inside that counts’.
Seat cushions are invariably replaced…….with the type of cushion to suit you, ranging from ‘soft and squashy’ to ‘very firm’………the choice is yours.
If you are thinking of reupholstery..make the right choice

Below is a typical ‘tired’ old sofa, style floral pattern ….vey Laura Ashley, great at the time, but when it came to ‘throw out the chintz@ it was time for a revamp. Now stripped repadded and re modelled and reupholstered in a classic, but more up to date style, it starts afresh with a new lease of life.

A little ‘heirloom’ perhaps, great for an odd corner or bedroom, but that 1960’s fabric just had to go:

Below is a typical ‘oak frame’ lounge suite, getting on in years, but the frame of this type of furniture seemed to be made to last forever.
However age takes it’s toll on the upholstered part of the suite.
The cushions are long past their ‘sell by’ date, the webbings and cloth over the seat base has ‘given up the ghost’ and the material now looks a little sad and dated.
The old webbings on the seat frames were stripped off, new heavy duty webbing fitted, the tops padded and recovered. The seat cushions were replaced using a heavy duty, fire retardant filling. Their is no hard and fast rule of cushion replacements, as we tailor the job to the customer, so they can be ‘soft and squashy’ to very firm, we can always help you with your choice.
Finally the new tailored covers are made and fitted. This customer chose a light fabric, which really sets off the rich colour of the wood frame. An added bonus of this material is that although it is heavy duty, it is also machine washable(up to 40 degrees) and as all the covers are zipped cleaning is not a problem.
This suite has now had a complete revamp and a brand new lease of life……..which means many more years of use.
WE CAN DO THIS TYPE OF SUITE FOR YOU, EVEN IF YOU ARE OUT OF OUR AREA. WE CAN ARRANGE TO HAVE THE PIECES WE NEED COLLECTED BY CARRIER AND THE NEW ITEMS RETURNED BY THE SAME TRANSPORT.

This is a ‘conservatory’ type piece of furniture. Often you will find that the frame is made quite well, but normally let down by the inferior cushions fitted on them. This results in them very quickly deteriorating and looking very sorry.
We made a different, and more substantial seat cushion, designed and made cushions to fit the back. All these covers are zipped and removable for easy cleaning.
The results speak for themselves.

This chair, part of a lounge suite had some very hard wear over it’s 30 plus year life span. Everything was worn, broken or just totally ‘had it’s day’.
However the frame was serviceable, so we set about stripping off the old fabrics and padding, the frame was repaired and all joints checked and tightened, springs and padding replaced.
We fitted a very hardwearing cloth to this one, the gentleman being a bachelor, who said he was looking forward to the furniture lasting as long as the original. New cushions and castors finished the job off. Could be due back at the workshop in 2040…………?

Below is a ‘knoll’ (drop end) settee, probably made in the 70’s covered in patterned draylon velvet, buttoned back with rouche on the cushions and finished off with a fringe at the base.
Very nice and fashionable then, but oh so dated now.
The customers home was finished in a traditional way, so nothing too outlandish required for the furniture.
The sofa was stripped , repadded, new cushions fitted and fitted with a classic chenille fabric. A self coloured piping was used instead of the rouche, straight vallance replaced the outdated fringe. the new back cushions were more full, but soft and made without the ‘button back look’.
The final touch was the bolsters on the side, the old fashioned look gone and an elegant sofa in it’s place.
